..are those annoying pixel-square looking thingies in the dark parts of the screen unavoidable with VCD, or is it just cause I'm using a Playstation to watch 'em?  Would a higher end VCD p_layer_ help? Not that I can tell. VCD looks bad on any p_layer_ unless you have a REAL tiny screen. The only reason I ever bought them was because they were cheap. Todd D.

Let me clear the VCD misconception up, from someone who buys VCDs/laser discs/DVDs and VHS. I have a large VCD collection, but that doesn't mean it is the greatest format for HK films. About 50% of the 100+ films I have on VCD have pixelation, which I don't necessarily mind, because I buy my VCDs cheap. The other half are as good or nearly as good as some of my laser dics.  It's really a crap shoot when it comes to VCDs, and I believe the pixelation is mainly due to how much compression the film is given to be put onto the dics. To me VCD format is good, especially when it is easier to find older _title_ of films compared to finally finding it on LD only to find out that someone want both legs for it. One final comment.  If your going to buy VCDs  you should have a VCD P_layer_ or a DVD P_layer_ (like a Sony machine which doesn't chop off the subtitling) to view this format. Playing a VCD movie on a desktop computer only enhances to pixelation and makes the film darker.  I use a VCD P_layer_. These opinions are mine, and if you don't agree, that's okay, everyone has there own preference of format.  I say whatever works best for you. Though, I do love DVD, especially with all the HK films coming out! ! Respectfully! Ted
