Take the super bowl for example. The studies and numbers that we see from inside the industry suggest that the vast majority of the audience turned on the game not for the game, but to see the commercials. In fact, it was reverse surfing. They surfed away during the game and surfed back for the commercials. Cut it out, Ron! We had what turned into a little Super Bowl party at our house.  The three men were halfway watching the game, the women and small children not at all.  But we all paid attention during the commercials. I think there's something to it. <http://www.ucomics.com/foxtrot/2003/01/26/

My sister watches TV *only* for the commercials.  She especially makes a point to watch the SuperBowl during the commercials.  She records and collects commercials.  But that's to be expected from a marketing PhD I guess. -A

That's absolutely correct.  I have heard a few droids claim that using methods to bypass the commercials is stealing.  That's quite a stretch, but the point is a valid one.  If the technology to delete the commercials unseen becomes widely used, there will be no more free programming.  I can understand why the networks would be worried about that. It's only been recently that tv commercials have consumed 15 - 18 minutes of each broadcast hour.  If the networks would drop it back to, say, 9 - 12 minutes of each hour (thereby restoring 6 minutes of programming that's been trimmed from the schedule over the years), they would not be having quite the problem they are experiencing. As it is now, older TV shows must be edited to fit into the new, smaller time slots caused by the expansion of commercials. George Crissman I agree!  They are bringing it on themselves.  That also makes each commercial worh less as it get caught in a bigger sea of ignoed commercials. Of course, if that only showed 30 seconds per hour, the commercials would be worth a lot more, but not enough to make up the loss. I think they may be pushing the other side of the curve righ now, but I'm not in that line so don't know.  If they expand it to 59 minutes of commercials every hour virtually no one will see any of them. But they face a very uncertian future. Frankly, I'm not sure free TV will survive. William R. James

Never mind the fact that television programming has become so lame that I now spend probably less ten hours a week watching it.  That includes news. <aolme, too!</aol In fact, the only reason my TV gets power during the week is for the occasional game of Halo , but on the weekend I spend an hour watching Alias

Depends on your definition of free . If you mean free as in no monetary cost, no, it doesn't. It just means the end of the current advertising model. Go look at why Soap Operas are called Soap Operas. Paid product placement as advertising is certainly nothing new. That's why I put it in quotes. Nothing is really free.  Someone pays for it, the only questions are who and how much. William R. James

I remember being horrified the first time I saw two commercials in a row. I think it was during a Lone Ranger episode.
