<< If you have cable, try to watch/tape Strangers in Good Company. It will be on Bravo this Friday (2-27). _____________________________________________________________ Finally got to see this film, and I wasn't disappointed. It was wonderful. Definitely think it would appeal to some NX and/or Local Hero fans, with its marvelous characterizations, its lovely, isolated setting, fish-out-of-water elements, gorgeous scenery, and, most of all, the way it blended gentle humor with heartfelt drama. I especially loved the leisurely pacing of this film. It really allows us time to get to know these intriguing characters, to absorb these rich characterizations. For those who aren't familiar with the movie, it's a 1990 Canadian film about a group of women who become stranded in the wilderness when their bus breaks down. It's basically a detailed look at the interaction that occurs between these women; they get to know one another, discuss their hopes, their dreams, their fears... This is an incredibly observant little character study. And its one of those rare films that's both touching and funny (some of the humor is sly and subtle, but some of it is also laugh-out-loud funny; loved watching their various attempts to catch fish... and also the frog scene). And I particularly enjoyed the melancholy, yet lovely, Local Hero-type ending. (By the way, this movie reminded me a lot of the 1991 film Mediterraneo, which is another of those NX/Local Hero-type films. I think Strangers is the better film, though. And, to a lesser extent, it reminded me of Bagdad Cafe. ) After I watched this film, I realized that the _title_ was perfectly fitting: These strangers really did make for good company. In fact, I'm looking forward to being in their company again. Sorry to ramble on about it, but I just found it fascinating and utterly charming. Thanks for recommending it. Jason K.

FYI: The women in the film are not professional actors; I would not call what they do on film acting of any sort, nor are they performing. There was no screenplay, no _script_, just a few plot points that were to be addressed. Jason, I don't know if Bravo showed the additional footage (post-production interviews with the cast ) , but it was extraordinary. Reflecting upon themselves in the film, etc.

You could almost sense that these women were just being themselves, talking about their own lives. I guess that's what made it so unique
