Hey everyone, So at our last meeting, we decided that if we were going to meet our goal of screening one film this semester for our planned film festival, we would have to get it together before Monday's meeting. We narrowed our possible screening ideas down to two, for many reasons (future plans, costs, interest, etc). They are Reefer Madness (the old original, not the musical) and Super High Me, and little synopsis' and _link_s to websites are below. We tentatively decided to hold the screening at 8pm, Wednesday Dec 9th in PAC001. So, here's the deal: I've spoken to Tim Shiner about getting screening rights for these films, and got final word on them this morning. The black and white classic version of Reefer Madness is actually public domain because it is so old at this point, and you do not need to pay any money to screen it. SciLi has a copy of this film, and I rented it last night, so we could already put this screening on. This movie is crazy and silly, and it has a lot of historical significance to the ridiculous state of the drug war today. Could be an opportunity to challenge the myth that marijuana has always been illegal/culturally frowned upon. For Super High Me, they don't require you to pay screening rights, but you do have to purchase a copy of the film, which is somewhere around $16. I feel like we could just go to any electronics type place that sells DVD's and buy it. I saw this movie at some point, and it's really funny, and we can definitely use it to talk about health factors involved with marijuana, or to talk about the decrim/medicinal issue. So, what I am saying is that both of these options appear to be viable! But now we have to decide which to do, and to confirm the date/location.* So here's what everyone can do to make sure this event works: PLEASE RESPOND BY 6pm TOMORROW!!!* 1) Send out an email with your vote, either for Super High Me or Reefer Madness. 2) Include any ideas you might have to make this screening into something more political or constructive, ways to push our agenda, engage critically on the Drug War, any special activity ideas you have, really anything! We can talk about these more on Monday, and decide what we would like to do. 3) Confirm that the location/date/time (Wednesday 12/9/09, 8pm PAC001) are all ok. It's likely that some folks will have conflicts, but please let us know if there is a conflicting event that you know of that we should keep in mind. 4) Let us know if you can help with any of the logistics and outreach for the event, as this will determine if the event will be a success. Main tasks are: Flier making and Fliering, making a Facebook event, making a Wesleying post, and writing up/sending out a mass email... anything I'm forgetting? Ok cool! Please get this in ASAP. For folks who said they were interested in making fliers (Lisa, Mica, Yael? Anyone else?) will you have any time Saturday night through Monday to make a flier design for this, so I can make tons of copies for folks to flier with Monday night? Great well I think that's all! Send in those votes! See ya'll on Monday, Paul 1) Super High Me <http://www.superhighmemovie.com/ - 2007 *Super High Me* features comedian Doug Benson and explores the current situation with medical marijuana in California and the United States, specifically focusing on the conflict between federal and state law and the explosive growth in medical marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles over the past two years. As part of his journey, Doug smokes, eats and vaporizes medical marijuana for thirty consecutive days in order to get “Super High.” But there is a catch–first Doug must go thirty days without any marijuana and undertakes a number of tests, completing the same tests while medicated and while sober, in an effort to find out what marijuana does and how it really affects people. Along the way, we follow Doug as he goes out on the road to stand up gigs across the country and hangs out with fellow comedians Sarah Silverman, Bob Odenkirk and Patton Oswalt. 2) Reefer Madness <http://www.imdb.com/_title_/tt0028346/ - 1936 *Reefer Madness *is a propaganda film that relates the story, as told by high school principal Dr. Carroll to parents at a PTA meeting, of the scourge of marijuana. The tale revolves around Mae and Jack, accomplices in the distribution of marijuana, who manage to entice the local high school kids to stop by Mae's apartment to smoke reefer. The lives of all who are involved with this menace are inevitably shattered. One man becomes so addicted to the killer weed that the guilt over framing a teen for murder causes a judge to order him to be committed for life to a mental hospital! Dr. Carroll closes by advising us to not incur the same tragedy.
