they have no reason to commit crimes, Sure they do.  It works for them and they've never been taught that it's wrong. Gosh, are you saying we could improve these people(Oops they're not people they're thugs) by teaching them?  What a radical, loony, far-out position! At an early enough age, sure.  But moral education has to become harsher as the student becomes more capable of inflicting serious injury on others.  At least it must if they haven't absorbed enough morality early enough to know better than to *act* upon their increased ability to hurt others.  And here we come back to topicality.  Heinlein's discussion in ST via Dubois and Johnny about disciplining children and disciplining puppies.  Refusing to create an association in a child's mind between harmful behavior and painful consequences for the child is going to result in an adult who has no (or very little) internalized constraint against hurting others. Of course, they copied the swastika from a few other places too, but that doesn't change the fact that their stink is now fairly heavily impressed upon it.  The same might be true for Triumph of the Will type scenes, regardless of their pre-Nazi origins. Yeah, I believe the Swastika was originally some sort of pagan symbol... One of the Five Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism, and also common among North American Indians.

Rehabilitation is a farce because we don't have a science of the human mind. We don't know how to manipulate the shape of a human personality, except at a very crude smash-with-hammer level. This may be a good thing.  OBSFnal ref:  innumerable brain-washing stories, droogs, etc. I don't think we need anything that precise; the carrot and the stick  has worked for millenia.  We have a multi-billion dollar stick industry in this country, and here in The Prison Capital Of The World(AKA Texas) we can see how well THAT works. The carrot is badly out of favor and could be implemented in lots of low-level ways. It has worked for millennia?  Not very bloody well!  Those who would rather take than make (who, in my experience, make up the vast majority of felons) scoff at the Stick, as being not as tough as them/unfair/unnecessary, and either try to steal the Carrot or scoff at it for being half-hearted/insincere/insufficient/too late. Without a real, clear and _object_ive way of knowing how the mind works, both carrot and stick are ineffectual to those who are raised in such as way as to make them believe that crime is acceptable/better/fair. cd

The Empire, I think, is modeled somewhat after Nazi Germany. In Star Wars the Empire is not only pro millitary but also pro war and conquest. Think of the very last scene in Star Wars. After the destruction of the Death Star. The medals given to valued heros of the Rebellion scene?  What about it?  You can't seriously be drawing a parallel between a generic military honor and Nazi Germany can you?  *All* nations give out medals (or equivalent), usually in front of a relevant audience too. I remember when I saw that scene the first time - my reaction was Omigod, Triumph of the Will.  It's not a question of being Nazi, it's a question of using a _style_ of symbolic pomp that the Nazis used quite effectively in their rallies. Uh-huh.  I've been part of ceremonies with a lot of pomp and symbolism (and uniforms and swords and stuff) that have no connection to Leni Riefenstahl's work or Nazi Germany at all (the ceremonies in question having started long before Adolph was ducking artillery in WW1).

that Verhoeven subverts and in some ways mocks Heinlein's earnestly pro-military story. Not that that's any surprise, given that Verhoeven grew up in Nazi-occupied Holland.
