What happens is not so much what as how it happens, for this story is as old as the battle of the sexes. The Lubitsch Touch makes all the difference; Shop, together with Ninotchka and To Be or Not to Be, is a true masterpeice from director Ernst Lubitsch. Lubitsch's observations of ordinary people portrayed by extraordinary actors like Frank Morgan (just post -Wizard of Oz), Joseph Schildkraut, and Felix Bressart make Shop a seasonal delight. It has been remade twice as a film - as In the Good Old Summertime (transposed to the U.S. Midwest) and as You've Got Mail (to New York City).
