[I hope this actually gets posted; if it does it'll be a minor miracle. Sorry if you've seen this before and I wasn't aware of it. MJS] So here's the deal:  We live in a small community outside of Portland, OR. Sherwood is about 20 minutes from downtown Portland (pop. approx 400K), and about 15 minutes from the nearest mega-multi-screen theatre complex. There are two single-screen family theatres in the area, each about 10 to 15 minutes away; these are the kind that have Monday $1 night and run movies after they've run everywhere else.  There's a closed theatre that is quietly for sale here in Sherwood, and I've toyed with some ideas for bringing it out of mothballs. Our town has been relatively isolated for a long time due to geography and politics.  The population is primarily rural with a core of suburban single family housing wrapped around an older small downtown area

The two irascible gentlemen who own this place spent a wad trying to make a go of it . A friend of mine owns a part of the organ

I wish I had better information for you, but I will tell you what little I know about the theatre business. My brother-in-law managed theatres for general cinema for around twenty years before leaving the business.  They used to send him to the ones that needed a boost in business and he would whip them into shape.  He always hired kids for the tickets and concessions because he could get them cheaply.  He told me they did not make any money off the films, and the film distributors were even trying to dig into the concession sales which was the only profit center. Fred also complained about the cost and arrogance of the union projectionists.  He was required to use them or face the usual union harrasment.  They would come in start the movies, change the film, shut the projectors down, etc.  It was not a lot of work and lots of slough time that he had to pay for.  By union guidelines they could only be required to run the projectors and would not do anything else.  Fred hated the projectionists. Anyway, some things for you to consider. P. Foote

A rule of thumb that I once heard was one screen for each 10000 people within a 20 minute drive. Since the area is growing, it might be a good deal in the long term.  You should check out the numbers.  See how much it will cost you to open doors. Then figure your cost of running the thing.  Your labor shouldn't be too bad. You might want to try some novelties to drum up business.  For example, you might serve hot dogs, show cartoons before G and PG movies, have special attractions such as Rocky Horror or series all in a row (like showing all three Star Wars movies in a row).  All else being equal, people will go the theatre offering the most bells and whistles.
