Low             High 1   2   3    4   5   N/A There are three _style_s of film: Realism, Classicism & Formalism REALISM: (Concerned with content) attempts to reproduce the surface of reality with a minimum of distortion.  The filmmaker  tries to suggest the copiousness of life itself.  It is less manipulative of the audience's perception.  The most extreme example is documartary film.  The camera is used conservatively. The filmmaker is more concerned with subject matter than how it is manipulated.It is not to say that it lacks artistry, but rather realistic cinema specializes in the art that CONCEALS art.   FORMALISM: (concerned with form) deliberately stylize and distort the raw materials. Often referred to as _expression_ISTS, because their self-_expression_ is at least as important as the subject matter itself.  The camera is used as a method of commenting on the subject matter, a way of emphasizing its essential rather than _object_ive nature.  Formalists are often concerned with spiritual and psychological truths.  There is a high degree of manipulation (or re-forming of reality).  Yet, it is precisely this deformed imagery that can be so artistically stiking in such films  The most extreme example is Avant-Garde film.
