Whiteside claimed that Johnnie was bisexual.  Not homosexual. I don't have the book handy, but Whiteside refers at some point to Johnnie's reputation as a strictly gay fellow (should we attribute THAT to Hollywood Research?) and on another page we learn that Elvis gave off strictly heterosexual vibes onstage and that made people forget the effeminate Johnnie. All of that is Jonny Whiteside's opinion off of which he makes a living.  He likes to eat.  Me, I believe Johnnie was an individual and Elvis was an individual and Little Richard was an individual.  None was effeminate.  Nobody's stage presence was more masculine than the others'.  They were the pioneers.  By the time you get to David Bowie in 1972, there's no more pioneering so the stars have marketing in mind. Well... I've always thought that Little Richard and Johnnie Ray were a bit on the effeminate side.  Perhaps I'm more attuned to that sort of thing, having grown up in an era when the topic of homosexuality was out of the closet.
