We got the boy a new cell phone. The old one's dead. I seem to recall you're not supposed to throw them away, though. Something to do with the battery? When we got the last one, I thought they even gave us a mailing pouch so we could send our old dead one back for proper disposal. We didn't have an old dead one back then. But now we do, and no pouch. Staples stores (for example) have a drop box in the store for recycling unwanted phones.

That's a solution if the battery craps out.  My wife's phone lost the display - it works, but you can't confirm the number when receiving a call,

Often Radio Shack stores will accept, too. It isn't as convenient as a mailing pouch, but this place might have info for you. If you put in your zip code, they'll tell you the nearest recycling center. http://www.call2recycle.org/home.php?c=1&w=1&r=Y/ Boron

Any time you suspect that a small household good is poisonous, drop by your local fire-hall and ask them.  That's how I got rid of the chlorox jug that we'd been using as a sharps disposal for Wendy's needles.  They've also accepted CFLs from me (no grey cup jokes

Any time you suspect that a small household good is poisonous, drop by your local fire-hall and ask them. Weird.  Here, the source for that sort of information is the garbage- collection department.  (Or, more precisely, the Department of Finding Reasons Not to Collect Your Garbage.)  And what they currently say is, electronics (including cellphones) get put out alongside, but not in, the regular garbage bin.
